New OrleansGeneralNew Orleans is a very unique city made up of a multitude of cultures. New Orleans is stepped in culture because of our position as one of the major ports in the world. We are nicknamed the "Crescent City" in reference to our location in the crescent of the river, an area where the river gently curves around one side of the city. The Greater New Orleans Area includes such locations on the East Bank of the River as New Orleans (the city), Metairie, Kenner, Gentilly, Jefferson, Harahan, and River Ridge. Just over the river on the West Bank, Greater New Orleans also includes Harvey, Gretna, Marrero, and Terry Town, to name a few. You may hear of locations within the city of New Orleans such as the University Area, the Garden District, and Faubourg Marigny, which includes the French Quarter and the CBD (Central Business District). When receiving directions in the city, most locals will use the terms "away from the river" or "away from the lake." The lake is Lake Ponchatrain, which is North of the city. Lake Ponchatrain is 40 miles by 25 miles and is crossable by the Causeway Bridge, the longest bridge in the world. The bridge will take you to the "North Shore" which is mostly residential areas including Slidell, Mandeville, Madisonville, and Covington. WeatherNew Orleans enjoys pleasant weather year-round, with temperatures that rarely dip below freezing in the winter and reach 100 degrees during the summer. From July to September, New Orleans experiences hot, humid days and many rainy afternoons. It has been said that you should carry both sunscreen and an umbrella wherever you go in New Orleans. The following table of average rainfall and temperatures is from BigEasy.com
EntertainmentNew Orleans has many tourist attractions, and tourism is one of its largest industries. New Orleans has several large events every year: Mardi Gras, Jazz and Heritage Festival, Essence Fest, and many more. All year long, tourists visit the Vieux Carre, or the French Quarter, an historic area in downtown New Orleans. The city is well known for its fine cuisine. ASWA visits a new restaurant each month for its meetings. This is just another great benefit of membership in our organization. News
