About UsAbout the National OrganizationASWA is a professional not-for-profit organization founded in 1938 in Indianapolis to increase the opportunities for women in all fields of accounting. Today there are over 100 chapters and 6,000 members across the United States. Our members share similar concerns and challenges at professional and social levels and encompass all levels and fields of accounting, finance, tax, and consulting. There are four membership classifications: regular, associate (less than two years of experience), affiliate, and retired. Members include partners and employees of national, regional, and local CPA firms. Financial officers, controllers, financial analysts, data processing consultants, academicians, recent college graduates, students, and women returning to the work force. Many of our members have attained professional certifications. About the New Orleans ChapterThe New Orleans Chapter is part of the South Central Area, which includes the states of Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas. The New Orleans chapter was sponsored by the Atlanta chapter in 1958 and began with 21 members, 10 of whom were Certified Public Accountants. Today we have about 100 members who meet once a month, usually on the fourth Wednesday, at various restaurants in the area. Special monthly meetings include Student Activities, Public Relations, a Christmas luncheon each December, a joint meeting with the Association of Governmental Accountants, an annual membership drive and wine tasting, and an Officer Installation luncheon in June. The chapter serves the New Orleans community by volunteering at Celebration in the Oaks, the WYES Showboat Auction, the AARP Tax Aide program, the Red Cross humanitarian Ball, and by supporting Dress for Success, and international organization that provides business attire to women for job interviews. |
